The antioxidant glutathione (Averill-Bates DA, 2023)
Glutathione (GSH) is an endogenous tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. It is the principal intracellular non-protein thiol antioxidant in mammalian cells.
It has been studied extensively in research as a regulator of cellular redox state, a substrate for glutathione peroxidase and glutathione-S-transferase enzymes, and a participant in xenobiotic conjugation and detoxification pathways.
Research has also examined its roles in aging, oxidative stress in neurodegenerative models, hepatic metabolism, and various conditions involving oxidative damage.
