MT2 (Melanotan II) is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analog of α-MSH and a non-selective agonist at melanocortin receptors (MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, MC5R). Its broader receptor activity distinguishes it from MT1.
Research has examined its effects on melanogenesis (skin pigmentation via MC1R) and its central nervous system effects via MC3R/MC4R, including studies on appetite regulation and sexual response. The related compound bremelanotide (PT-141) was developed from this scaffold.
It is used in preclinical research as a pharmacological probe for the melanocortin system.
